ESSENTIAL OILS AND PETS: A GUIDE TO SAFE USAGE FOR YOUR FURRY FRIENDS

SAFE ESSENTIAL OIL PRACTICES

Essential oils have recently gained significant popularity among the world's population. Still, due to their high concentration and thus sensitivity, it is advised to use them wisely and carefully. In addition to careful use on the skin, people and home, it is crucial to use essential oils carefully if you have pets.

This is already known to many animal owners. Still, in case it is not, or the topic is not so familiar to you, we decided to guide you on how to safely use essential oils in a household where animals reside. As well as pointing out which essential oils should be avoided entirely in these situations, all for the sake of ensuring the health and safety of your animals.

Dogs and cats have different physiologies and sensitivities than humans, so it's crucial to understand which essential oils are safe and how to use them properly.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE SENSITIVITY OF PETS TO ESSENTIAL OILS?

Before we touch on specific essential oils that are safe for your pets (especially cats and dogs), it should be emphasized that we pay special attention to this "problem" because cats and dogs have different physiologies compared to humans. Therefore, they react differently to certain things, such as oils.

For example, cats have an increased sensitivity to aromas. Their liver metabolizes compounds differently than humans, which can make certain substances toxic to them. Cats lack certain enzymes necessary for efficient "digestion" of essential oils, making them particularly sensitive and can cause significant damage to their bodies.

On the other hand, dogs can tolerate some essential oils. Still, it is important that the oils are used under controlled conditions and that they are diluted enough to not harm them and their digestion. However, before deciding to use essential oils in the area where your pets live, we recommend that you consult with your veterinarian to ensure that you will not harm your pet(s).

ESSENTIAL OILS SAFE FOR DOGS AND CATS

Although many essential oils are used for different purposes, few can be used safely around dogs and cats. We decided to reveal to you which oils we are talking about, and you can find each of them in our online store.

ESSENTIAL OILS SAFE FOR DOGS

The first essential oil that we will single out is lavender essential oil. Lavender is known for its calming properties, and if properly diluted and used sparingly, it can help calm dogs, for example, in dogs suffering from anxiety, stress or mild skin irritations. You can spray it in a well-ventilated area or dilute it with a base oil for use on the skin or fur.

Frankincense essential oil is also on the list. This essential oil is known for reducing inflammation and promoting relaxation. It can also be used for dogs that suffer from anxiety or have problems with painful joints.

You can also use Cedar essential oil in your household. With this essential oil, you can ward off irritating and annoying insects that harass you and your pets. Still, you can also be used for minor skin irritations. But remember that it is crucial to use the correct cedarwood oil and dilute it properly.

ESSENTIAL OILS SAFE FOR CATS

Regarding cats, the list of safe essential oils is significantly smaller precisely because cats are much more sensitive than dogs. Hence, the concern for their protection is even more significant.

Frankincense oil is an essential oil that is recommended for use in a household where cats live. Like dogs, this essential oil is considered safe but highly diluted. It is crucial to consult a veterinarian before use and be very careful because the essential oil can quickly become toxic to cats.

WHICH ESSENTIAL OILS SHOULD NEVER BE USED ON PETS?

In contrast to safe oils, the list of oils almost strictly prohibited for animal use is significantly longer. You will be surprised that some of the more popular and well-loved essential oils are on that list.

Tea tree essential oil is highly toxic to pets, especially cats. It can cause side effects ranging from skin irritation to more severe symptoms such as drooling, vomiting, tremors and even coma, but these are sporadic cases.

Next on the list is Eucalyptus essential oil, which contains compounds that can be harmful to pets, dogs and cats. Swallowing or inhaling Eucalyptus essential oil can lead to respiratory distress, drooling, vomiting and lethargy.

Citrus oils such as Orange and Lemon essential oils are also hazardous for animals. Citrus oils are known to cause gastrointestinal upset in pets. Ingestion or exposure of animals to these oils can cause vomiting, diarrhea and sensitivity to sunlight.

Although less toxic than other oils, Peppermint essential oil should be used cautiously around pets. It can cause indigestion and skin irritation if not properly diluted. Similarly, Clove essential oil can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and indigestion and is best avoided entirely if you own or are around animals.

HOW TO SAFELY USE ESSENTIAL OILS AROUND PETS?

You can (and should) use essential oils safely around your pets in several ways. First of all, the most important thing is to consult your veterinarian. Veterinarians are experts in the health of your animals. They can provide guidance on dosages and how to dilute essential oils to make them safe for pets.

Only use essential oil after first diluting it well. If you need to know in what quantity you should use a particular essential oil, consult with experts (veterinarians or certified aromatherapists ) who can give you specific advice and answers.

Under no circumstances should you leave essential oils where your pets can reach them. Close the bottles well and keep them away from pets to prevent ingesting the essential oil, which can be harmful and toxic to animals.

Similar to humans, when you introduce new essential oils into your animals' lives, observe the animals' reactions and behavior. If you notice any discomfort, agitation or adverse effects, discontinue use immediately.

LOCAL APPLICATION OF ESSENTIAL OILS ON PETS

Whether you use them directly on your pet's skin or otherwise, diluting essential oils is vital. The proper dilution ratio will depend on the size of your pet and the essential oil you are using. It is recommended to consult with a professional before use so that the ratio is correct and, therefore, safe.

If you use essential oils locally, on the fur or skin of animals, mix the selected oil with a base oil (such as coconut or jojoba oil ). Apply a small amount of the diluted mixture to a small area of the pet's skin and observe any unwanted reactions during the next 24 hours. You can continue with the mix on a larger skin area without response.

USING A DIFFUSER IN A HOUSEHOLD WITH PETS

The answer is yes if you can use a diffuser if you have pets. However, using a diffuser requires caution and concern for the well-being of your pets. Using the diffuser responsibly and safely will benefit you and your animals.

Ensure that the area where you use the diffuser always has enough fresh air and that they do not use essential oils of very high concentration. Also, pay attention to the amount of essential oil in the diffuser and do not overdo it with the amount of drops. We know that you will smell fantastic, but the safety of your pets comes first.

Remember, every pet is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Prioritize your pet's comfort and well-being, and always be careful when introducing new scents or products into their environment. If you need clarification on using a diffuser around your pets, consult experts familiar with pet health and aromatherapy.
