RELIEVE ALLERGIES USING DIY BALMS WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

IT IS THE SEASON OF PLEASANT WEATHER, BUT A LESS PLEASANT TIME FOR SOME

Nature is awakening, warm and sunny days are here, outdoor activities are a must – spring is in full bloom. Sounds great, doesn't it? If you have seasonal allergies, your answer is probably "well, not really". Sneezing, a runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, inflamed sinuses, difficulty with breathing, a feeling of scratching in the throat, headaches, and general malaise – this is another, less pleasant time of the season.

But where do allergies come from, why does pollen bother us so much? Unfortunately, our body sometimes gets confused and turns against itself. It sees pollen as something dangerous and harmful and begins to defend itself by secreting histamine. Excessive secretion of histamine will then lead to the above-mentioned unpleasant symptoms. Fortunately, there are natural remedies that can help you. They come in the form of essential oils – very reliable allies when it comes to seasonal allergies.

MAKE A SINUS-CLEARING AND HEADACHE RELIEVING BALM

Among the most common symptoms of people coping with seasonal allergies are respiratory problemsclogged sinuses, runny nose, and sometimes dry cough. This is often followed by a headache, especially if you blow your nose many times a day and thus additionally irritate the sinuses. Here’s a simple recipe for a skin balm that you can use to alleviate these difficulties.

You will need the following:

Making it is more than easy. First, melt the shea butter. You can do this by steam heating – aim to simply melt – don’t overheat or burn it. Pour the melted butter into a glass jar, add the essential oils, and mix thoroughly. Wait for the balm to cool to room temperature and return to a solid state. Then close it and store it in a dry and cool place for up to a year.

Massage and rub your the balm several times a day onto your temples (making sure it doesn’t come in contact with your eyes), forehead and back of the neck. If you have a cough or feel pressure in your chest, apply it to your chest and back. In case you feel pain in another part of the body, use the balm as a painkiller on those places also.

Eucalyptus essential oil is great for clearing the airways as it stimulates circulation and reduces inflammation. It will help in the secretion of mucus that accumulates in the sinuses or lungs. Its freshness will also help with headaches. It will provide additional antiviral and antibacterial properties. Although they are not the cause of allergies, viruses and bacteria will more likely find a host in an allergic person due to irritated and damaged mucous membranes.

Peppermint essential oil, like eucalyptus, will make breathing easier and open up your sinuses. It will reduce inflammation and remove pain or pressure you might be feeling in your head or neck due to its blood flow activating properties. It will also work against tension and stress and wake you up and energize you in moments of fatigue. Like eucalyptus, it has antibacterial and antiviral properties.

MAKE A BALM FOR SKINCARE AND BETTER SLEEP

As a result of sneezing and frequent blowing of the nose, irritation and damaged skin of the nose and face are common in people allergic to pollen. Although more common during the day, seasonal allergy symptoms are also present during the night and can lead to interrupted sleep and reduce its quality. Fatigue during the day follows. To give your skin some extra care, and along the way provide better sleep and rest, here’s a simple recipe that will help you with that.

As with the previous balm, the process of making it is very easy. Steam heat your shea butter just enough to turn it into liquid form. Pour the melted butter into your glass jar, add true lavender essential oil and mix well. Once the balm has cooled and has become solid, it’s ready for use. Like the balm with eucalyptus and peppermint, you can store it for up to a year in a cool and dry place.

Massage this balm on your nose area – especially on irritated skin, on the temples (making sure it doesn’t come in contact with our eyes), forehead and back of the neck. Do this before bedtime to minimise allergy symptoms during the night. Also, use it during the day for a soothing and skincare effect.

True lavender essential oil is very effective in reducing allergy symptoms. It has anti-inflammatory properties and has a balancing effect on the immune system. It can relieve headaches that can occur due to clogged sinuses, swollen mucous membranes or constant sneezing and nose discharging. It also acts as a natural antihistamine agent and thus reducing the allergic reaction. It has a very calming and relaxing effect. This is important because stress contributes to increased histamine production within the body. Relaxation with the help of true lavender can increase your stress resilience and reduce your allergy symptoms. With its calming and soothing properties, it’s the essential oil of choice for insomnia. Combine its anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties with calming and relaxing effects and give yourself a chance for a good night’s sleep in times of seasonal pollen allergies.

A bit of additional advice:

True lavender essential oil can be applied undiluted to the skin, which is a rare thing when it comes to essential oils. Feel free to apply it directly from the bottle. However, we recommend that you dilute it at least a little bit before skin application because the shea butter will provide you with additional skincare.
